Player Name: nogamo
Character Name: Mao Montblanc
Alias: Mao
Gender: Female
Age: 20
Race: Commoner
Class: Merchant
Country: None
Personality:
Being a merchant has taught Mao to be aware of the context of her relationships with others, prompting her to be direct and calculating when dealing with customers. Around people who are not customers, she is soft-spoken and kind, modest and mature, all without seeming condescending or haughty. Many girls younger than her would label Mao as the "ideal young woman," full of pride for her work and confidence in herself.
Unfortunately, being on the move all the time limits her time with friends, so eventually they become nothing more than memories of people she has met in the past more so than close companions. When parting from people she becomes close with in towns, a lingering sense of guilt and sadness lasts for a few days before being dismissed subconsciously. She doesn't enjoy this fact, but it is something she cannot control without seriously changing her lifestyle (that is, staying in one place).
Mao has the travelling bug and cannot stay in one place for long, claiming that the monotony will weaken her "merchant's sense." Friends have suggested that she move to a larger city where the populace is less predictable than the smaller communities, but Mao believes this to be a cheap way out of the experience. Many may agree that Mao's decision to remain on the move forever is an indication that she is looking for something, be it tangible or ideological, that will give her life meaning. Whether or not she will find what she is seeking is irrelevant, as one of Mao's tenets is "Experience, whether positive or not, is more valuable than the product I sell."
History:
Mao grew up in a small town outside of Daleko, the capitol of Farthing. Daughter to a high ranking merchant and a seamstress, Mao was immersed from a young age in the arts of making clothes and selling products. In time, Mao was able to sew her own clothes and attend her father's shop without supervision. Labeled as a child prodigy, Mao was allowed to sit in on Guild meetings with her father in Daleko (part of this permission stemmed from her father's position in the Guild). During those meetings, Mao would be found at the front, eyes wide and pen scribbling on paper as the Guildmaster spoke of the philosophies that all Merchants should follow.
Sadly her father's membership with the guild waned due to a schism of sorts between merchants who felt that money was a priority and those who believed service was most important, not money. He eventually left, deciding to live his life with Mao's mother as a humble seams man for the townsfolk near his home. For the next few years Mao picked around in her father's library of books on economics and mathematics, soaking as much about her father's mercantile arts. From time to time she could hear her father lamenting his decision to be a fixed merchant, dreaming of alternate histories where he and his family would travel around Tirrna and live the life of a true merchant.
When Mao reached marrying age (around 17-18), she decided to pursue her father's failed dreams of travelling the world and began working at a local shop in her small town. For the next 2-3 years Mao jumped around from job to job, moving up in the town and becoming one of the prominent shopkeepers--all without joining the Merchants' Guild yet. With the money she was making in town, Mao bought herself a horse and buggy, an open buggy where she kept some of the items she had bartered and clothes she had sewn. Her destination, Daleko and then the world.
Appearance:
Mao's hair is a thick blond color that, when tied back, reaches to just above the middle of the back. Her eyes are a deep turquoise. She is well-endowed for a woman her age, and unintentionally accentuates that trait by wearing low-cut blouses adorned with patterned bands and jewels. Sometimes she opts for a blouse such as the one in the picture and a pair of pants (tailored to not seem so manly) or sometimes a Bohemian-style skirt that reaches just below the knees. Generally she prefers flat-sole shoes that leave the tops of her feet exposed save for the toes.
Physically she is a neither skinny nor chubby, but not athletic. She's about 5' 6", 135 lb. with an average distribution of fat and muscle (toned more than sculpted, but not so much as to be physically discernible).
Strengths:
Weaknesses:
Job: Merchant
Job Specific:
Mao owns a single horse and a carriage for which to carry the items she wishes to sell. Such items include metals (for jewelry and in some cases weaponry), clothing (sewn by her), and fresh spices.
Guild: Yes
Guild Rank:
Weapons or Tools: She carries a small knife in her blouse for personal protection.
RP Sample:
"Cobblestones...Mary your hooves sound so lovely when you walk on them! I could listen to you trot along all day on these lovely walkways."
Mao stood slightly to lean over and pat her mare as the stones passed quickly by. "I wasn't expecting the road leading out of Farthing to be so well paved. The grass sneaking through the cracks though is not a good sign, since 'Grass never grows on a well-beaten path,' as my father once said. Don't you agree Mary?" she asked. Mary gave a slight snort and maintained her pace, unaware of what cobblestones and paths were. To her only grass and her master existed. Nothing else was important.
When two hours had passed they were officially in Verdan, land of the Druids but also home to many other jobs (including Merchants!). A smile spread on Mao's face as she admired the scenery, all of which seemed to conflict in certain areas. Jungles surrounded her, but through the foliage she could see snow covered mountains. The air also smelled like salt--not uncommon for areas near the ocean--but this salt carried an odor unlike the kind she knew from Farthing. Despite all of this, Mao's excitement was abundant at the prospect of meeting new people and acquiring new experience in the Guild.
"Maybe, once I'm finished in Verdan, I can try my luck in the West!" she exclaimed.

Strengths:
- Swift Item Acquire - Despite her young age, Mao is able to acquire items at a greater rate than some of her senior merchants.
- Aural and Oral Clarity - Her voice is very clear and, when the occasion calls for it, can be very loud. Moreover, her hearing is impeccable. Naturally this gives her an advantage around shoppers.
- Monetary Proficiency - Handling money and reading the economy is another strong point of hers that can be attributed to her father's teaching.
Weaknesses:
- Lack of Battle Knowledge - Mao is not valuable in a battle at all (merchants shouldn't focus on those sorts of things, right?)
- Naivete - Mao has been scolded for travelling without protection against monsters and bandits. This overconfidence (or or ignorance) proves to be very, very dangerous for someone that is not able to adequately defend themselves.
